Set against the backdrop of Camelback Mountain, Petra is a sprawling estate rooted in formal restraint and technical precision. Comprised of a primary residence, guest house, and wellness center, the home explores a livable form of brutalism through monolithic massing, disciplined materiality, and carefully choreographed spatial sequences. Travertine defines the architectural language of the residence, wrapping floors, walls, and key architectural elements to reinforce the home’s monolithic character and giving the project its name, Petra (meaning stone). The mass walls define and divide programmatic element, most notably through a central wall that separates the active living spaces of the home from the private owner’s suite and tranquil wellness areas. Emerging vertically from this stone composition, brushed aluminum clad volumes appear to freely lift from the monolithic base, reflecting the changing desert light and softening the perceived scale of the residence against the sky. The flat site was articulated to conceal a five car semi-subterranean show garage beneath the home. Accessed by a descending ribbon driveway that circulates around a circular water feature and planter, the arrival sequence transforms the automobile into part of the architectural experience itself. The garage connects directly to a lower entertainment lounge and bar that extends seamlessly into the rear landscape and pool courtyard. Water is used throughout the estate as both reflector and organizer. A full length lap pool anchors the central courtyard, culminating in a vehicle display where the car appears to float on the water’s surface. This interplay between architecture, reflection, and movement reinforces the project’s focus on atmosphere and procession. Petra was designed for a discerning client seeking bold, highly detailed architecture within a context often defined by convention. The result is a residence that balances monumentality with serenity through restraint, material honesty, and rigorous execution.
